THIS MONTH, WE ARE excited to introduce a brand new podcast: The Business of Jewelry Podcast, featuring Jimmy DeGroot (Train Retail) and Peter Smith (The Retail Smiths). In this inaugural episode, Jimmy and Peter take on one of the most pressing issues in our industry today: hiring salespeople.

In a no-holds-barred conversation, the two industry vets revisit Smith’s book, Hiring Squirrels, to see what has changed in recent years. They discuss some of the most important questions to ask experienced and inexperienced salespeople, and Jimmy asks, “How do retailers get candidates to show up for interviews?” They also discuss why retailers need to be okay hiring candidates who are less than perfect, and why a structured interview process is critical.

On Saturday, August 12, at The INSTORE Show in Rosemont, IL, the most impressive roster of management trainers ever assembled will facilitate a day-long workshop targeted to retail jewelry store owners. In this video, Jimmy DeGroot of Train Retail and The Jewelry Training Institute and Peter Smith of The Retail Smiths share why this workshop is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that should not be missed by any jewelry retailer who wants to not only take their business to the next level, but make lifelong friends with their peers while they do it.

The workshop will be co-facilitated by Smith and DeGroot as well as Sherry Smith of The Edge Retail Academy and Megan Crabtree of Crabtree Consulting.

“You and I and Megan and Sherry are used to going off and doing things by ourselves at various events and talks, so the idea that we’re going to be in the same room for a day — and we’re going to be there for a select group of retailers who participate with us — I mean that’s very exciting,” says Smith. “We’ll be speaking both individually, and then hosting conversations with the retailers, and then some of us will be doing stuff together, which brings a whole new dynamic to it.”

The topics to be covered are those at the forefront of business owners’ minds, including hiring and retaining top talent, what’s next for lab-grown diamonds, developing data-driven store events, managing inventory more effectively, and much more.

“The beautiful thing about this is that it’s workshop,” says DeGroot. “We love that dynamic as independent jewelers.”

In this episode, host Jimmy DeGroot and co-host Doug Meadows of David Douglas Diamonds in Marietta, GA discuss how crucial passion is to success and why it’s also necessary to instill that passion in one’s employees.

Jimmy remarks that everyone he’s known who is happy and successful in business started from a passion for what they were setting out to do. Doug shares how he was able to discover his passion even though he grew up in the business as a third-generation jeweler. At 23, Doug was invited to move from Detroit to Georgia in order to open a retail jewelry business with a friend, and he found his love for jewelry retail in his relationships with his customers.

Doug raises a critical question, though: How do you convey and create that passion in your staff? He and Jimmy then talk about practical ways to do that, including a quality that many may not immediately connect with passion — vulnerability.
