AT THIS YEAR’S Cannes Film Festival, the opening ceremony and opening night premiere Jeanne Du Barry brought together A-list actresses and celebrity models in some of the most jaw-dropping gowns and jewels — which is traditionally the case at the event. Many of the jewels at the festival were from Chopard’s new high jewelry collection, as the brand has been a major sponsor of the event since 1998 and has created jewels for it for the past 76 years. Some of those jewels were worn by Uma Thurman and Catherine Zeta-Jones, who both emphasized red in their ensembles.

Thurman wore a red cape with a paler gown and finished the look with one of my favorite necklaces of the evening, a multi-strand ruby choker with a centerpiece. The choker was accented by smaller ruby earrings, a wide diamond bracelet and a thinner ruby bracelet worn on the same wrist.

Zeta-Jones captivated in a fiery red gown with what I am guessing were ruby earrings, although they could have been spinels — information on the stones has not been released. She also wore a huge ring that definitely looked like an emerald cut ruby surrounded by diamonds.

Safe to say, the bold color in a sea of mostly diamonds (all beautiful, all worthy of a mention) was the jewelry highlight of the opening night.

Speaking of a vivid jewelry palette, Alessandra Ambrosio wore the dazzling Pomellato Skyline necklace and earrings suite, which has a brilliant ombre effect. A spokesperson for the company reported that the design was inspired by Milan’s architectural landscape and was handset with 128 rare, bezel-cut spinels, ranging from scarlet to azure blue, accented with pavé of diamonds. Matching earrings finished off the look.

Choose the Easy Way to Retire with Wilkerson

After 47 years in business, Jim Saylor, owner of Jim Saylor Jewelers in Kapa’a, Hawaii, knew retiring successfully meant holding a going-out-of-business sale. He also knew he needed help to do it right. He chose Wilkerson. “I’ve heard a lot of different names of companies that do this type of thing,” says Saylor. “Wilkerson’s always seems to be in the forefront.” Saylor says the Wilkerson folks really cared about the success of the sale, making the next phase of his life a lot easier. “I’d recommend Wilkerson to anybody contemplating a change,” he says. “They are true experts.”
